Maybe they will ban students with GLBT parents next, since it is already going to be illegal to mention their families.

Sheetwearers of tennessee unite under the banner of thoughtcrime

Conservatives sure do love the government when the government hates gays! The south is cancerous and syphilitic with Republicans

Do these idiots think that if homosexuality isn't mentioned, it will somehow cease to exist? That there won't be any GLBT kids in those classrooms if no one tells them about gays?

Good luck with that.

Thoughtcrime! Maybe they can pass a bill to force people to say doubleplusungood instead of gay.

So how does little Johnnie explain he has two mommies, or daddies ?

He doesn't. He sits there in shamed silence, or accepts detention for talking about it at all.

His mind explodes from the existence of something apparently non-existent. Like Superman or Jesus.

Well, they could make one daddy wear a wig and panty hose until the kid gets to high school and hope he has great legs.

This is going to have some interesting consequences. First is the intended consequence of denormalizing homosexuality by forcing children to get knowledge from sources that are primarily anti-gay and likely inaccurate. Second is the unintended consequence of degrading the image of school as a source of accurate information. At least I hope it's unintended. Choosing to do this at early grades guarantees the desired value set has been internalized by the children before they get to grades where accurate information is available.

It'd be nice if instead of gay they just said "LESBIAN" or "GLBT." "VAGINA" is always a winner.

Can't corrupt these poor little kids with reality. And heaven forbid their vocabulary grows, since Tennessee is such a nationwide leader in literacy. Gotta keep them stupid and living a lie (the whole country being heterosexual and Christian) if they're to grow up being Real Americans™.

Anyone know how many jobs this has created - any projections posted?

If you control the language you control what people think.

The Tennessee GOP understands this.

The Tennessee GOP understands this.

Take away the power to say something and you take away the power to think it. The Founders understood this well too.

I believe this is also known as the "ignorance is bliss" law.

It's the USSR model: propaganda creates reality.

Another Confederate state playing right in to the stereotypes. Of course, in the Industrial World, they won't see this is another archaic move by the good people of Tennessee but the USA instead.

Tennessee Outlaws Gay

More news about this legislation here:

The measure, SB49, is sponsored by Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, who unsuccessfully pushed same idea - nicknamed the "don't say gay" bill -- for six years as a member of the state House before he was elected to the Senate.

As introduced, the bill would have put into state law a declaration that it is illegal to discuss any sexual behavior other than heterosexuality prior to the 9th grade.

But when it came before the Senate Education Committee, Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, contended that current law already effectively prohibits such instruction by deeming is a misdemeanor teaching of any sex education that is not part of the "family life curriculum" adopted by the state Board of Education.

IOW, this bill was never passed in the past 6 years because it's already illegal to teach homosexuality since it's "not part of the 'family life curriculum' adopted by the state Board of Education."

he doesn't! And if he does, he's expelled, right?

The very act of having a gay family becomes forbidden to talk about

Any gay person in tennessee is honestly in danger, if this shit keeps going. Don't expose yourself to these cockroaches, and don't give them your tax money. move somewhere else that isn't teeming with neo-klansmen.

"Excuse me, conservative politico, don't you care that corporations are looting the country and ignoring climate change for their own transitory gains?"

"Look, over there, it's a coupla' homo-sekshuls!"
