In the past, Perry has charged that the Obama administration is punishing Texas.

Has it ever occurred to Perry it might be God's will, kind of like the absence of rain?

Perry should have to gorge on his own stupidity. States can't exist by the grace of God, and federal favors when the grace runs out. Likewise, I once heard a saying that went something like "biting the hand that feeds you."

Time for a little reflection, Governor Big Hair.

Guv.

Symbolically a short time ago, you wanted Texas to secede from the union.

Well, symbolically Obama is offering you aid for your parched earth.

Sturm und drang...dear governor...Sturm und drang.

Mr Perry just learned that talk doesn't pay the bills.

Cry me a river, Perry. You bitch about the Feds all the time and got elected because of that and now you want them to help you.

"You have to ask, 'Why are you taking care of Alabama and other states?' I know our letter didn't get lost in the mail," Perry, a Republican and frequent critic of the federal government, said after addressing a Texas emergency management conference.

Socialism! Redistribution of wealth! Birth certificate!

I don't think Texas should get a dime of federal aid until Texans vote idiots like Perry out of office. That goes for all the other Tea Party-ruled states as well.

There are valid reasons for that federal aid. Plenty of counties have fires raging out of control and don't have the firefighters needed to combat them, since they have volunteer forces and don't have the infrastructure to deal with these fires.

It's a damned shame that Governor Goodhair had to go pander to the teabaggers by bleating about secession. We need that aid badly.

I disagree, albeit mildly. Even though Perry and Co. may not enjoy it, the fed does have a responsibility to its states (that, and I happen to live there and believe me, I tried voting him out twice.) I think a more appropriate response would be to help Texas in every way reasonably possible, then constantly remind him of it when he tries to market himself as "states rights" come next election.

Off-topic: Hypothetically, if Texas were to secede from the Union, would America take the Johnson Space Center back?

Man, I've seen six year olds less egotistical, and hypocritical.

Goodhair is projecting onto Obama how he and other ruthless state politicians play these games. A few years ago, Perry blocked a major appropriation for the state junior college system, causing chaos and anxiety until the legislature could re-group and push it through. The reason was pure, unadulterated, childish ego: The junior college board had failed to extend the traditional courtesy of calling on the governor in person to beg for the measure's approval. This is entirely unnecessary for any practical reason, it is simply a gesture and acknowledgment of the governor's power. Goodhair was butthurt by the omission of the kowtow, and he took it out on thousands of mostly poor and working class students around the state. The political environment in Texas really does resemble that of a third world dictatorship at times.

I know how Perry can raise at least part of this money: He can instruct the Department of Public Safety not to allow elected officials and senior officials to violate the traffic laws with impunity. This is one of the most corrupt aspects of law enforcement in Texas. Just ask any rank and file Texas cop what happens if you dare to issue a ticket to an elected official, especially a sheriff.
One rightwing radio commentator responded to my raising this issue by telling me to "grow up" and saying me "that's how the real world operates." In fact, it doesn't operate that way everywhere, in some states officials take great pains not to pretend they have a different set of rules.

I was at the Texas State Sheriff's convention a few years ago. Nearly all of them were falling down drunk when they left and drove their official cars back to their hotels. Drunk driving arrests from this event alone would have raised tens of thousands in revenue, as well as getting dozens of corrupt maniacs out of office.

Gov. Rick Perry says he won't sign a budget for the next two years that dips into the estimated $6.2 billion available from the [Texas Rainy Day Fund]. In his latest argument against tapping it, he said it is "our insurance policy against a major natural disaster," such as a hurricane storming up the Houston Ship Channel.

Since the fires aren't rain, I guess Perry doesn't count them as a natural disaster.

Didn't the good governor just get $36B in aid for the wildfires?

I wonder what he'll do after Texas secedes.

PIMF...Gov Goodhair got $36 million not billion.

....if you apologize on national television for your actions and then resign, Mr. Perry."

Texas sure would have to suck a big ball of raised taxes for services

The tornadoes have caused at least 340 deaths, 255 in Alabama. There is mention on other blogs that Texas cut state aid to socialist rural fire departments in the last budget. Any details, Texans?

re: #17 Decatur Deb

Also, the Texas Forest Service didn't factor in wildfires:

...the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission found in its review of the program that 59 of the 74 counties determined to have a high risk for wildfires got less than $1 million in grant money for their volunteer fire departments from 2001 through 2009, the period covered in the report.

The commission's report criticized the Texas Forest Service for not considering wildfire risk as a factor when divvying up the grants.
