We elected Jerry because we figured this was his last effort and had nothing to loose so would do the right thing for a “change” and leave a positive legacy. Nuts. They will spend it all vs reduce the deficit. Hosed again.

California is such a lovely place - if we could only shake the politicians and their self serving greed off of our, our children and grand children’s backs.

I wonder how much of that tax increase is tied to higher gas prices.

Bobibutu, I’d be really happy if they spent this windfall restoring all the programs that have been slashed from the public school system in the past few years, turning it into one of the worst-funded in the nation. As a parent with 3 kids in that system, I can assure you that this has been terrible and it matters.

Researchok, why would it be tied to gas prices, which were certainly not going up because gas was being taxed, more’s the pity?

Californians pay about $150 billion per year in federal income taxes and only receive about $120 billion in federal spending. That’s a $30 billion per year net donation.

That money subsidize states like Alaska, Mississippi, Louisiana, the Dakotas, Alabama and Kentucky, all of which receive at least 50% more than they pay in.

It’s ironic that the politicians and people of those states point to California’s fiscal mess as a result of liberal spending run amok. California would be doing just fine if Californians weren’t paying the bills of the self-proclaimed fiscal conservatives.

re: #3 elizajane

I understand your frustration. However, putting our trust in a system that has, imnsho, been broken for many, many decades, is misplaced. There is something to the phrase “if its going to be its up to me”. There are parents who get directly involved in their kids education on top of public schooling. I honestly do not know how they manage it with everything else but they do.

OK, this just makes me mad.
I have taught my children Latin. I have done a summer of studying Roman history with them (not related to the Latin). I have taken them to major cities, museums, and historic sites all over Europe and the USA and taught them about history. I have done extensive French lessons with the older two. This summer we are doing Russian history and more Latin. Two of my kids also have math tutors. I am bloody involved with their education.
THEY STILL NEED DECENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
