Could U.S. Still Fund a Palestinian Authority That Includes Hamas?

Good article. Quite frankly, funding a terrorist organization like Hamas is illegal and that’s why you’re hearing bipartisan support for cutting the P.A funding should the groups reconcile. Ultimately, Congress has to approve the expenditure, approx $500 million, and they aren’t likely to do that.

The issue from the WH’s POV had less clarity.

“We have seen the press reports and are seeking more information,” National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said that day. “As we have said before, the United States supports Palestinian reconciliation on terms which promote the cause of peace. Hamas, however, is a terrorist organization which targets civilians. To play a constructive role in achieving peace, any Palestinian government must accept the Quartet principles and renounce violence, abide by past agreements and recognize Israel’s right to exist.”

The Whitehouse is taking more of a wait-and-see attitude before making any specific statements. The reason for that could be that this “unity” government between Hamas and the P.A. is not all that unified. Israel’s Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon says that the unity government was formed, not out of a moderation of their extreme views towards Israel, but because Hamas is feeling weak and threatened due to the creation of the Iron Drones who can shoot their rockets out of the sky.

“When [Hamas] is under pressure they can compromise temporarily. Hamas went to reconciliation out of weakness. They are facing great criticism from within,” Ya’alon stated. He added that Israel should not “delude” itself into thinking that the agreement between the Palestinian factions is a real reconciliation.

At any rate, it’s good to know where both sides of the Congress stands on this (it’s not a surprise really).
