Only half? 13 centuries of hand copying by semi literate scribes surely made more of a mess of it than that.

This issue of pseudepigrapha came up here a few weeks ago. It's an old issue, a very old issue, one that has been discussed since the early compilations. The issue of canonicity had to deal with authorship.

What is new is the book that is being offered for sale. By using such a hot button word as "Forged" the author knows he'll be able to sell a whole lot more books than if he picked a title like "On the Psuedopigrapha and Issues of the Canon", or some such scholarly title.

It's way more than half. The whole thing was lifted from previous Persian and Egyptian religions, just like Judaism was borrowed from Babylonian and Sumerian religions. Buddhism was ripped off from Jainism, etc.

Ehrman loves a provocative title. "Misquoting Jesus" was another of his books that shines a light on how thoroughly manufactured the New Testament is.

This stuff has been known since at least the last quarter of the 19th Century.

This stuff has been known since at least the last quarter of the 19th Century.

But mostly by seminary and divinity students who then turn around and fail to share the real history of the text with lay people.

The value of books like this is that they get talked about by the faithful and some of the arguments get discussed. In doing so those that are still susceptible to reason get a chance to escape .
