LAS VEGAS (AP) - After 45 years promoting treatment and a cure for children he calls “my kids,” comedian Jerry Lewis announced Monday he is retiring as host of the Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon that has become synonymous with his name.
Lewis, 85, issued a statement through the association calling it “time for an all new Telethon era.”
An era is now closing. I grew up, literally watching Jerry Lewis Telethon’s every year. Donating my whole dollar I saved up all year. (I did not get allowances, I saved from picking up cans/bottles and returning them to get the deposit and such.) It won’t be the same without ya Jerry. I’ll be doing my best to listen to you sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” one last time on the telethon. You’ve worked hard for MDA and “your kids”, adult and kids alike and you’ve earned the right to step back and allow others to step up and continue to carry the torch for MDA. Thank you Jerry for all you have done for so many.
