Bangkok Post : Bomb kills two monks in Yala
The blast occurred at about 6am on a local road in Banyo village of Baroh tambon while the two monks were making their daily rounds to collect alms.
Phra Chatri Thongraj, 47, acting abbot of Wat Suan Kaew, and Phra Thirapong Dongmali, 40, died instantly in the explosion. They were the last monks at the temple.
Two of the monks’ security escorts - Pvt Pannathon Noochaikaew, 22, and Pvt Kraisorn Modkhan, 22 - were seriously wounded in the blast.
The monks were travelling with a group of six soldiers when the attack took place. Pvt Pannathon and Pvt Kraisorn were travelling in a pickup, another two were riding a motorcycle ahead of the truck and the two others were on a motorcycle at the rear.
The bomb, which was made from a gas cylinder, was planted in the road and detonated as the monks’ caravan passed.
The impact of the blast left a two metre-deep crater.
