Known incidents of sexual abuse of minors by priests rose sharply during those decades, the report found,

It is more likely that reports of abuse increased because the openness engendered by those social and cultural upheavals led to an increased willingness for victims to speak out.

re: #2 Shiplord Kirel

That was my thought. Who would have reported it a century ago? And who would have believed them?

Agree with you both. The women’s movement in the 70’s brought issues like domestic violence and abuse of children up front and into the light. Prior to that, who was listening?

Riiiiiiiight. So what they are saying is, they need MORE sexual restriction? The flagellation must commence!

And they wonder why there are problems in the church? I guess “The Devil made me do it” was passe?

This is one of the more ridiculous investigative reports I’ve ever read.

After paying hundreds of millions to abuse victims and systematically denying and covering up for the abusers, they’re still looking to place the blame on anyone else. The Catholic church is a real bastion of light and good, yes indeedy.

Pimps. Dark ages pimps.

If the report found this:

and the problem grew worse when the church’s hierarchy responded by showing more care for the perpetrators than the victims.

then it got one thing right.

The reality is that the restriction on marriage only became dogmatic around 1200 because it became necessary for economic and political reasons. The eastern church, for one example, still allows priests to marry IAW the bible.

When you force people to act against the way god created them is it any surprise when the then violate other rules from god? Feh!
