We’re 200 miles away, but the smoke from that fire has been settling in an inversion layer over the valley in Albuquerque at night for the last few, and it’s absolutely choking. The whole house smells like wood smoke, there’s ash on the cars, we can’t leave windows open at night or the air conditioning on. Last night was miserable. I was dying of heat stroke and opened the door to the balcony and my eyes started burning, it’s that bad. Visibility on parts of I-40 yesterday afternoon was almost zero, apparently.

Damn.

And we’re barely into June.

The AZ/NM fire season usually ends around the 4th of July, when the rainy season starts. Then the firefighters move on to California and the Pacific Northwest. When their season starts early and ours ends late — that’s when there’s real trouble.

This Wallow fire is real trouble, too. Here’s the latest.

Thanks.

Scary, scary stuff. I do wonder what the potential damage to populated areas might be.
