Amazing misogyny.

Sounds like it goes to mental locales worse than that, even.

No question, contempt for women is front and center—I suspect the men and “nice ladies” who worked on this are a-bubble with disgust and anger when contemplating any woman that doesn’t do exactly what they want. But there’s a deeper, almost gnostic contempt embodied in this film. These are people for whom damnation of others has a pornographic component. Like the end of Left Behind, that final scene isn’t there to frighten—nonbelievers aren’t the audience, believers are—it’s present so they can feel tingly about being Great and Good. These are people who imagine God is synonymous with themselves…and have no doubt that were they to make a mistake, for them and only them would context and necessity allow for some theophanic exception. The ideological frame is little more than window dressing…this “type” can subsist as vigorously on the secular as the sacred.

Nothing quite like projecting one’s views of women onto the big screen.

The Religion of LoveTM which sends people to be tortured for an eternity in Hell. Because it’s all about “Love” can’t you see?

Fantastic comment. I think you’re absolutely right— there is a pornographic component to it, without question.

Just when I thought (based on Merryweather’s earlier page) this couldn’t get any sicker, it did.

I’m speechless.

So I’ll just cut and paste this comment from the article Lidane linked to (emphasis mine):

However, I also want people to also make note of the fact that the character who committed suicide also goes to Hell.

Think of how sick that is. Del Vecchio appears to think that eternal torture is appropriate for suicide victims, despite the fact that those who take their lives are usually in a deep state of despair and unrelenting psychological or physical pain. Many are very mentally ill. As a person who has lost a loved one to suicide, I will simply state I think that Ken Del Vecchio is a sick, sadistic, and horrible person. He may care about fetuses, but not about fully sentient, conscious people.

Now that I know the whole plot, I can certainly see how it would make me change my mind and become pro-life.

Are sarc tags necessary here? This film could not speak to anybody who wasn’t already a raving nutcase on the subject of abortion.

As for the suicide going to Hell, that notion has a venerable pedigree in Christianity. And I recently saw a morality survey where, if I remember correctly, about the same (rather large) percentage of people said that suicide was morally wrong as said that abortion was morally wrong. It kind of surprised me, which is why I remember it. I hastily add that the survey did not ask whether the people who did these things should be sentenced to eternal damnation.

The idea for using the word “porn” in this fashion comes from one of the early slactivist posts—I’d recommend the single post and all of his blog entries without hesitation.. re: #6 iceweasel There are other ways to say the same thing, but I find it bluntly articulates the eroticism of self-righteousness.
