I can't tell if he is referring to an exception for partial-birth abortions or for any abortions. Regardless, the man is a misogynistic swine.

I couldn't get to the original editorial piece that Santorum wrote in the Philadelphia Inquirer (May 1997) but here's a link to a partial transcript. I remember reading the article; Santorum's wife developed a life-threatening infection during pregnancy which resulted in a second-trimester abortion.

'Karen, a soft-spoken red-haired 37-year-old, said that “ultimately” she would have agreed to intervention for the sake of her other children.

“If the physician came to me and said if we don’t deliver your baby in one hour you will be dead, yeah, I would have to do it,” she said. “But for me, it was at the very end. I would never make a decision like that until all other means had been thoroughly exhausted.”

The fetus was delivered at 20 weeks, at least a month shy of what most doctors consider viability.'

Which are the abortions most likely being done solely to save the life or health of the mother. At cat-tikvah's link, you can read that what Mrs Santorum had was a full-birth abortion. They didn't need to induce it, but they would have if they had needed to. But they will trust no other woman with that decision.

And to add insult to injury -- again, I couldn't find the original article but Karen Santorum authored a piece in the October 1997 issue of Family Circle magazine about her tragic experience, which apparently convinced her that the only choice women should have is to carry to term, regardless of the ultimate viability of the fetus. This is from an activist alert from the National Organization for Women in November of '97:

"Family Circle magazine featured an anti-abortion article in the "Full Circle" section of their October 1997 issue. The article, written by Karen Santorum, decried the use of late-term abortion under any circumstances. And it told the story of her own tragic pregnancy and the decision she and her family made – an option she and her husband would deny to other women .

Karen Santorum is the wife of right-wing, anti-abortion Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pa.). In 1996, Senator Santorum led the debate on a bill that attempted to ban late-term abortions, and refused to make an exception even in the case of "grievous bodily injury" to the woman. In Santorum's article, she expresses her view that carrying a non-viable fetus to term is the only option, and apparently does not think the woman's health or future fertility should be a consideration. "

I admire people with principles, even if I disagree with them. However, I truly loathe hypocrites, especially the self-righteous/"pious" ones.

Not so. There was actually a lot of debate about whether partial birth abortion needed a health exemption. The exemption was retained at Clinton's insistence.

We don't need to distort Santorum's words to know that he's a steaming pile of santorum.

QFT. People like this--incoherent ideologues who operate in Manichean terms--always imagine that they're the only ones with a justifiable exception.

I think feministing.com once had an article about the phenomenon of women who are active anti-abortion protestors...then get an abortion...then turn up on the picket lines of the very same clinic they visited. And the logic is always the same "...I made a mistake and this is necessary; all those other women are irresponsible whores."
