lets try these two reasons to get something else:

1) Abysmally poor value for the price
2) Really bad policies at apple re: malware or scam apps on their online store.

let's try reading the article to see whether such things are addressed...

Sounds like you are a #12.

I have a friend that makes games for mobile devices (Primarily Apple, they're the biggest market), and their business tactics are really really awful.

In general I might warn you against using advocacy stories as 'news reporting'

A better question is: why get a tablet at all until they come with usb ports, sd explansion slots, hdmi out ports, etc.

Until then I'll stick to a laptop.

I was hoping that the Playbook would be more mature; getting unmetered internet via blackberry device tethering is pretty sweet, and I'm grandfathered into AT&T's unlimited international BBery data plan.
But the firmware just isn't ready yet.

Also #12: I'm not getting locked into iTunes.

I don't recall the part where I categorized this as news reporting - it is an opinion piece that I happen to think makes some very salient points. As for business practices, which company do you see as having superior business tactics? You can find people that complain about Google's tactics as well.

Your friend may have disagreements with Apple (he's not the only one) but as you so clearly state, they're the biggest market. Do you think they are cheating their developers? Then why is everyone doing it?

Finally, as for "advocacy", I see that you didn't even bother to read the small part I quoted where the author himself states,

As a reviewer of gizmos, I think that the iPad 2 is easily the best tablet on the market–and that most of the competition so far is too half-baked to be credible. As a lover of competition, though, I’m itching to see other tablets arrive that deserve to do well, too. So that question–”Why would somebody buy this instead of an iPad?”–is stuck in my head. I’ve been trying to figure out how an Apple rival can come up with a tablet that pretty much answers that question for itself.

Hard to call that comment advocacy, though it is clear that he likes the iPad.

I haven't used it, don't know anything about it other than what's on their website and reviews of folks who have gotten their hands on one, but the Notion Ink Adam has all of those features and more.

1. The Nook Color is a full Android tablet at 1/5 the cost.
2. Android is easier to program for because development tools are available for all platforms and you're less likely to have to learn any new languages. This will eventually result in a better selection of available applications.
3. Android doesn't care if you look at porn on a device that's your own property.
4. Linux Kernel based
5. Open ecosystem that's not tied to any one company.
6. Cheaper

I just want a kindle, now that they are down to $114.00 for a second gen version I might just actually buy one. I have no interest in a tablet, If I was still traveling for work all the time I can see some attraction, but not otherwise.

If FedEx can ever figure out where to actually send my iPad 2, I'm going to find out for myself.

I nothing on my home PC that I won't be able to do on an iPad.

I'm done (way, way done) with tinkering with computer stuff. Had my fill of Android and I found ChromeOS to be crap (similar to Google TV in readiness for market). Done the Linux thing and it bored me in about 20 minutes.

Guess I've just gotten old. ;)

Because my husband's company is giving its employees a discount on certain non-ipad tablets.

Works for me.

Apple's model will change. Eventually the content brokers will practically give these media devices away to put you into their walled content garden. I think of it like Moore's law and Marketing plans colliding.

Half the cost, actually. $250 + ~$20 to ~$500. :)

As for the rest, you are pretty spot on. Just like the early PC wars, this won't be decided by the users, but by where the developers want to work at. In this regard, I don't discount Microsoft yet.

I finally got my iPad. No thanks to fedex. Neat device so far. Heavier than I thought it would be. LGF doesn't work too well on it.

Looking forward to working with it. I think iOS 5 will really make it shine.
