Argggh. Three Kansas firefighters fired for looting in tornado-ravaged Joplin
Some days there’s reason to be proud of living in Kansas, and other days not so much…
Now for the most despicable story out of tornado-ravaged Joplin: Three unnamed firefighters from Baxter Springs, Kansas, have been fired for looting, and Fire Chief Les Page has been placed on indefinite administrative leave, according to the Joplin Globe.
The firefighters are accused of stealing from Joplin businesses on the night the tornado struck. As far as what was taken, that hasn’t been said. If this is all true, it’s shameful that first responders were stealing just as the rescue effort was under way.
Baxter Springs Mayor Jenifer Bingham released a statement last week acknowledging that the firefighters were fired on June 9 for “conduct displayed during relief efforts in the aftermath” of the EF5 tornado.
