I have visited the occupied Palestinian territories and have witnessed the humiliation of Palestinians at Israeli military checkpoints: the inhumanity that won’t let ambulances reach the injured, farmers tend their land or children attend school.

I wonder if he has also visited the nice new shopping mall, or, more to the point, examined the tunnels through which arms and contraband are smuggled. I cannot get past the fact that simply having suffered oneself does not make one an expert on the suffering of others.

First of all, at least I am making an argument. Your statement is a tenuous and snarky attempt, at best, to refute mine. Let me help you out. Tutu makes a one-sided, tunnel-visioned statement referring to a non-existent problem which is allegedly the fault of the Israelis. Gaza boasts almost universal literacy and a level of healthcare better than that of many surrounding Arab nations. Many tons of goods cross the Gaza border every day through Israeli checkpoints; Gazans are treated in Israeli hospitals while Hamas and their minions shoot mortars into sovereign Israeli territory. Meanwhile, alleged, self-appointed humanitarians bemoan the treatment meted out by the Israelis while conveniently ignoring Syria, Libya, Lebanon and Iran. In other words, think before you comment.
