I didn’t wind up citing any data in the story for the same reason that Gallup can’t draw conclusions from the drop it sees in its polling: There aren’t any large enough samples of American Jews out there to talk reliably about relatively small shifts. (I’m not sure why Gallup feels confident concluding there was “no significant nor sustained shift” when the article says it’s based on samples too small to detect one.)
But the broader issue, almost too obvious to mention, is that most American Jews, like most Americans, aren’t swing voters. The largest group are yellow dog Democrats; a smaller group are convinced Republicans; and many of all groups don’t vote based on Israel policy.
