Netizens shed light on looming North Korean famine / Possible cannnibalism being reported. via GMA News Online
With the obvious absence of state reports on hunger affecting North Koreans, social media sites such as Reddit and Storify have become platforms of discussion and information disemmination regarding the impending famine.
This article provides a very good overview of the current state of affairs in North Korea. A review of news aggregators, blog and other independent reports provides a stark view of the food shortages threatening an already malnourished population.
This report is particularly disturbing:
A South Korean aid organization, Caleb Mission, claims to have obtained a leaked document authored by the North Korean police that details a number of alleged crimes, including several unconfirmed reports of cannibalism. Almost all of the crimes described in the document are food-related disputes.
In one account, a male guard who could not bear his hunger killed his colleague using an ax, ate some of the human flesh and sold the remainder in the market by disguising it as mutton, the report said, without giving any further details such as when the alleged crime occurred.
