Conservatives don’t like education. Educated people are a lot less likely to fall for their bullshit.

I have a lot of family in Laredo. They’re outraged over this, but there’s not a lot that can be done, since B.Dalton was owned by Barnes & Noble. If B&N was willing to close the only dedicated bookstore in the city, they’d be hard-pressed to open a Barnes & Noble make up for it.

It’s a shame.

So in Andy’s world denying people access to books (other than the Bible) and the chance to educate themselves is a good thing?

I hate these morons. I learned all about “book lernin’ vs commonsense” from my yokel relatives when I was growing up. I was a National Merit scholar. Most families would have been proud, mine was condescending at best and downright hostile about it at worst. Not one of my 8 aunts and uncles or my 14 cousins has ever read one of my books. Only one of my brothers has. I learned to fly a plane, I can fix my own car, I raise cotton and horses on my own farm, I’ve been all over the world and I’ve survived in environments that would cause the “commonsense” relatives to come unglued in a single day. I live in a beautiful old home that I own outright and I have a Rolls-Royce in the garage (and a Chevy truck in the driveway, needless to say). Yet, according to them, I have “book lernin’ but no commonsense.” (They do pronounce it as a single word, just as they treat “license” as plural and add an “r” to “wash” and “push.”) They wonder why I want nothing to do with them and wouldn’t cross the street to piss on them if they were on fire. To hell with them and all their works and to the dust bin of history with the superstitions that both justify and perpetuate their self-willed ignorance.

I hope Laredo at least has public libraries. Sad to say, just as Blockbuster’s mortar and brick stores can’t compete with Netflix, bookstores are unlikely to survive in the internet era.

They do. The main issue is, for parents that don’t go online or can’t afford eReaders like the Nook or Kindle, dedicated bookstores were the best way to get new books in the hands of their kids. Libraries aren’t always going to have the most current stuff.

I’m hoping that something will happen to change the situation for the better. People shouldn’t have to settle just for whatever Wal-Mart decides to sell in their book section.

good grief, man. They’re on fire. Cross the street and piss on them. It’s your Christian duty.

If you hadn’t said it, I would have. This MSNBC story is over 18 months old.

We lost the last bookstore in Richmond, CA, about a year ago. Same problem. B. Dalton/B&N.
