And, the new Texas SBOE Agenda is already starting to show results!

Phil Plait at Bad Astronomy:

During the Texas State Board of Education hearings on science standards for Texas schoolchildren, BoE member and staunch creationist Barbara Cargill decided that the age of the Universe was up for vote. Oddly enough, I had some issue with that. You may vote on issues all you want, and you can even vote on morality if you’d like, but scientific reality is not a matter of opinion and cares not for the majority vote.

It is truly unbelievable that so many leaders and now SBOE members have such an open disrespect for science and scientists. They have no idea how much science has played a part in this world and each and every one of their lives. The late and great Carl Sagan once said:

We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.

Responsible adults everywhere should be openly encouraging science among American children that have been consistently lagging behind.

But but but... She just SAID that blogs put poison in your brain! And that's from a blog!

At least they spelled Dallas right.

It's not limited to Texas, sadly. We used to live in Kentucky when my kids were in grade school. They once brought home a notice from school that had at least five misspelled words in it. I used to be a copy editor; stuff like that catches my eye.

I was team teaching at an elementary school and both of us got sick and tired of seeing school newsletters and notices going out that made us (the school) look uneducated. We went to the principal and asked to have all the major correspondence that was to be sent out to the parents proofed by us first. He agreed.

That kind of stuff drives me nuts.
