I converted my Netflix to streaming only ages ago. If I want to rent something, I'll get it from Zune on the XBox 360.

I had streaming+1 just converted to streaming only because of this article.

I wonder why they're making that extensive a change?

To get everyone groomed to streaming only eventually. Right now Amazon prime and other services offer higher quality streaming for purchased and rented movies, it takes a lot of content engines near ISP hubs to provide these services. I think netflix is faced with more build out and and increasing squeeze from midlayer network streamers and ISPs. They are trying to downsize the mail ops and get to full streaming ops.

ok, that makes sense to me. Always scheming!

Yeah, and btw Netflix: the reason people are hanging onto disc plans is that you can't get a lot of the more popular stuff as streaming.

Content owners are asking a lot for commercial shows that were on network TV already, and that have already paid for their creation many times over.

E.G. you can't get CSI: NY streaming, or for that matter any of the CSI's you have to get discs.

re: #5 Thanos

well its kind of win win for them then, unless a bunch of people just cancel outright :p

I got streaming only Netflix back when I got my iPad. Was immediately disappointed in the selection: quite literally none of the movies or shows I was interested in were available. I went 0 for about 40 and just gave up.

Browsed what was available on streaming, watched a few really old movies (although not the good ones, Oscar winners I had always wanted to see were mostly unavailable) but it was more because I had no other choice.

I haven't logged in for 4 months now and will probably just cancel.

Bah, a dual output DVI/HDMI video card added to your 'puter' for as little as $10.00 plus shipping means that you can stream to your HD T.V. yourself without paying anyone anything. :p

Well, that's true, but you still have to have content on your computer to do this and you have to get that content somewhere. If Netflix wants people to migrate to streaming-only, they might want to increase their library of streaming titles. It is laughable right now. Don't even bother trying to find something popular there. If they want to hike prices by 60%, they need to also upgrade their streaming catalog by 60% and upgrade the availability of popular DVD titles by 60%. Otherwise, this increase is a total ripoff.

Most of the networks give up the most recent episodes of their shows for free on their sites. After that there are other ways of obtaining content that are also free but perhaps not entirely legal. Just saying...

There was an article on slate about how Hollywood is making the same mistake the music industry made by allowing legal options to be less convenient and lower quality than illegal options.
