In many of these cases I think it comes down to "building community". There is a real nutritional benefit by increasing the consumption of fresh vegetables and fruit, but the bigger payoff is having members of a neighborhood getting to know each other and working together.

They tried that in Detroit, but in many parts of the city the soil is so poisoned with industrial waste that nothing will grow.
