The “catch” you mention was from the June 30 press release announcing initial support for Android devices. The press release from today, is where Skype has greatly expanded the number of devices that are available, and devices directly supported.

Also, from reading the press release, it appears that video calling is available for all devices with Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above, and supports the front-camera conferencing on devices with 2.3 (Gignerbread). So, it is actually available for more than the 17 listed.

In addition, Skype said today that if users have smartphones not included in the list, but have a device running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above, they should be able to enable video calling by turning it on in the app’s settings.

“Skype video calling may be enabled by the user on almost all other Android handsets running Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) and above, that have a camera and a processor that supports the Neon technology,” the company said in an e-mailed statement to CNET.

According to the company, Froyo users with handsets featuring both front- and rear-facing cameras will only find support for the back camera. The company said that the front-facing camera will be supported on devices running Android 2.3 or above.

This is compete with Apples facetime (?)….

Remember that Skype is now Microsoft…

Despite the fact that Skype has been doing video calling for years, A lot of people seriously think Steve Jobs just invented it.

Google has it built into Gmail, Google Plus, and soon to be built into Android.

You have made it clear that you are a great supporter of Apple products. Fine; I have a mixed household of tech myself, with some Macs, some PCs, Android phones and an iPad somewhere slumbering peacefully under a pile of my son’s laundry. But this type of article is not really informative. It is incomplete and vaguely misleading, as indicated by RadicaModerate’s comment. I hope you don’t decide to start shilling for Apple stock here - cause you seem to be geting awfully close to just that.
