I live at latitude 55 degrees North where the light at this time of year
(also the Ramadan feast) lasts for about 17 &1/2 hours;meaning that that is the period when a Muslim must neither eat or drink .
This of course means that a Muslim cannot live north at a latitude higher than 70 degrees since daylight lasts 24 hours;unless he/she moves south for Ramadan.

I can tell you that is wrong:

People living in the extreme North can use a city in that nation farther south, or fast according to sunrise and sunset in Mecca (adjusted for timezone)

There's a lot of hateful stuff posted on Yahoo articles. Not surprised at all.

In April 2010, a mine collapsed in China trapping a number of miners. The comments in the Yahoo article blamed the Jews and then the thread went into a full-on Jew hating rant. That was the last straw for me for ever checking Yahoo news again.

I understand comment moderation is a 24/7 full time job. No one knows that more than LGF, but Yahoo doesn't even take a stab at it. This isn't freedom of speech. It's just hatred and Yahoo fully condones it.

I clicked "report abuse" for all those comments. I think the "moderators" are outsourced, non-English speaking and they just check the comments against a list of "Words You Can't Say On Teh Intertubz"

There are very few places I read comments any more. It doesn't matter what the subject is, there are always some knuckle-dragging trolls who'll start making ugly comments about their favorite object of hatred.

I don't think that helps, but check tomorrow to see if the comments are removed.

I'm convinced that Yahoo is run by racists. Truly. They've always had the "flag for abuse" which I used, but nothing was ever removed. Not days or even weeks later. Around the same time I started my own personal boycott of Yahoo, I very stupidly got into a fight with an anti-Semite on the comments. A few days later, I received a TOS violation at my Yahoo mail that I had been inappropriate and if I didn't straighten up and fly right, they would nix my email accounts. They never said what specifically I did or the comment I wrote, but I assume it was directed at the anti-Semite. Like I can't get a free e-mail account? I don't use my yahoo email anymore either.

Years ago, they completely shut down their comments for a revamp, which I thought would make an attempt at clearing up the hatred, but it never happened.

Any Yahoo article about Israel will bring out the crazy anti-Semitic Jew haters.

Any article about Islam, even a non-controversial, informative article like this one, will bring out the Muslim haters.

And any article about Obama will bring out the spewing, frothing racists.

Gah.

I find that smaller news outlets are better at policing themselves. Obviously, it's easier for them. Yes, it also shows up at CNN, but not nearly as vehemently. Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, whatever the minority, Yahoo is the King of Mean.

I think the moderators are trained to remove comments that contain certain naughty words, and spam comments. Everything else, it would seem, is allowed.

They merely want to live up to the original meaning of their name:

Swift describes the Yahoos as vile and savage creatures, filthy and with unpleasant habits, resembling human beings far too closely for the liking of protagonist Lemuel Gulliver, who finds the calm and rational society of intelligent horses, the Houyhnhnms, far preferable

Your comment about foreign moderators may be true. I don't know, but I think they don't have any. I think when they shut down the comments, they implemented software that tagged certain words, but I don't think anyone is actually reading them. Hmm... maybe I'll send them a tweet and see what they say!

Shit any article about anything remotely close to Obama will bring out the nutcases. I told this story before but there was a story about how Slovenia elected a black African immigrant mayor of a town there and the haters basically were like "well you see what happened when we elected a black man." I agree with those who have said that they do a piss poor job moderating as well.

15 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Aug 8, 2011 2:15:57pm

All unmoderated comments are a sewer, but Yahoo is especially bad. It's become on of the places racists, religious bigots and other haters go to be themselves. They toe the line when they post on places like NRO or the WSJ (which actively remove openly bigoted comments) but when they get to Yahoo they show what they really think.

Religious prejudice is an ugly thing.
