Erica Payne Challenges Fox News’ War On The Unemployed
Another example of the Fox ‘interview’ setup. Notable in this one is WSJ contributor Steven Moore’s desperate diversion of the main discussion on unemployment benefits into a lowbrow ‘why don’t liberals pay extra taxes if they think it’s such a good idea’ talking point.
Erica Payne did a great job at staying focused on the point that jobs are created by broad demand, not wealthy individuals.
Payne was on The O’Reilly Factor last night (Aug. 5, 2011) discussing unemployment insurance, i.e. Fox News’ push to reduce same. Even ‘liberal’ Juan Williams, the guest host, pushed the idea that those receiving unemployment benefits were sitting around on the taxpayers’ dime when they could be working at lower-paying jobs. It was no surprise given that Williams opened the segment by ‘asking,’ ‘Have American liberals run out of credible solutions to fix this economy?’ Payne did a terrific job, not just of arguing her position, but on pushing back against the ‘Let them work at McDonald’s and stop soaking the rich” mentality.

More about Erica Payne and the Agenda Project here:
The Agenda Project’s goal is to build a powerful, intelligent, well-connected political movement capable of identifying and advancing rational, effective ideas in the public debate and in so doing ensure our country’s enduring success.
Between out-dated political parties, self-interested multi-national corporations, and ineffectual elected officials, good values and common sense have lost their power in the public debate. Our goal is to return normal Americans to the center of the policy debate by cultivating an understanding of public policy, facilitating common action, and connecting the best ideas and the strongest leaders with engaged citizens, elected officials, the media, political insiders, and experts through a variety of in-person and on-line platforms.http://agendaproject.org
