Isn't this simply saying that the state's law trumps all other legal systems living within that state? In other words, isn't this just like the American legal code having more weight than Jewish law?

Thus, the Mufti will only be religious leader of Greek Muslims and will no longer have judicial authorities.

This sounds like that was not clear previously in Greek law.

That's what it sounds like to me. You can't abolish Sharia as it's not just a set of laws, it's a code of conduct that covers every aspect of life. It would be equivalent to abolishing Halacha, which would essentially abolish the practice of Judaism.

Who knows? Maybe the Greeks had been allowing Sharia courts to operate and make rulings that were incompatible with existing Greek law or something. Seems weird if that was the case, but it doesn't make sense otherwise. *shrug*

I correspond with a Greek jazz fan, and they're always looking over their shoulder at Turkey. I get the impression that even though they are no longer under Turkish domination, they can't quite shake the feeling that it's still there. They even mention Turkey in the article, and there's no reason to do so.
