25 years is 3 months for each victim.

Does this seem like enough?

That's from over two years ago. There is no explanation (or excuse) for the scare quotes on "raped"

The only thing I can come up with is, this is the result of news organizations canning their copy desks. Headline should read something like: Prosecutor: Bolivian Mennonite women 'raped'

The other explanation/excuse is simply heinous.

Mennonites living in a town called Manitoba? Manitoba is a Cree word.

Is there a Canadian connection?

Almost certainly there is. Manitoba is a Mennonite hotbed and a lot of them moved on to Bolivia. Brazil, Mexico and Colombia in search of greener pastures in the last 100 years or so. The Manitoba Mennonites, a lot of them at least, emigrated from Russia. Texas is loaded with these Mennonites, too, but a lot of them are of Swiss and German and Dutch extraction. FWIW

We have a fair number of them in Sask as well, but I've always tended to ignore them. Maybe it's not such a good idea to ignore such self isolated groups.

Yes, a Canadian connection. Some Mennonites left Canada for Latin America in the early 20th century, mostly Mexico, IIRC. And have migrated further to places like Belize, Paraguay and Bolivia. There are also other branches that have settled around the globe.

Yep, I was offered a gig to do translation for a couple of Mennonite brothers from Chihuahua State who had been busted smuggling drugs across to El Paso a couple years back. Apparently these guys have little colonies all over the place.

Mennonites have a lot of communities all over the continent. Their beliefs range from being virtually indistinguishable from the Amish, to being virtually indistinguishable from a mainline Protestant church. I suspect the very isolated groups are more likely to be odd than, say a large community in Pennsylvania.

Enough evil comes out of people living right in the thick of things that I'm not sure that self-isolated is a good enough reason to be suspicious.

I guess because back then it was still just alleged, not proven in a court of law.

The youngest victim was nine years old.

May she heal.

I don't find isolationist groups that only interact with "the English" and/or mainstream society for reasons of commerce or raw materials quaint. I find it creepy and cultish.

Warren Jeffs, KKK, Jonestown, etc.
