Heh, yeah I'm desperately trying to fight back the feeling of schadenfreude over someone getting stoned to death, but I'm not having a lot of success at the moment.

Would this be considered a "proportional response?"

It sure seems that way.

When it comes to the reign of terror and the horrors inflicted upon people by the Taliban, nothing that happens to them is too awful AFAIC. Can't muster an ounce of sympathy for the Taliban. Don't feel anything. Not a twinge of guilt or remorse. Not a damned thing.

[checks self] Nope. Nothing. Nada.

Afghans have a healthy survival instinct, but the culture also seems to have a strong emphasis on propriety and armed community response. (This is based on the vast knowledge I've gotten from reading a lot of newspaper and magazine articles.)

They can definitely be pushed too far, and it seems that this was one such moment.

Good for them.

Okay, now I don't feel quite so bad about my initial reaction to the story.

Tribes versus tribes, probably.

“People won’t tolerate the Taliban’s barbaric actions anymore,” said Dawoud Ahmadi, a spokesman for the governor of Helmand Province. “They will stand against them whenever they are harmed.”

Seems to me that stoning in general is a barbaric action, even stoning Taliban commanders.

That is also true. I hope that doesn't mean that they would stone anyone violating their religious precepts, which would make them no better than Taliban.

Still, what happened is a poetic justice.
