Considering the big poll lead Perry has already opened up over the rest of the GOP field, along with his extensive experience as a governor and proven fund raising abilities, I don't think your theory that he is a stalking horse is tenable. I don't see any reason why he can't win the GOP nomination.

" "It is a Ponzi scheme for these young people. The idea that they're working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie," Perry said. "It is a monstrous lie on this generation, and we can't do that to them." "

I've worked at Soc. Sec. for 13 years. About every first date I go on, after I've stated my place of employ I get the usual question "Will Social Security still be there...?"

It's pretty incredible how this meme has seeped into the public consciousness, even though the program has been paying out benefits for 70+ years. But I know a lot of Very Serious People keep repeating it.

I get your point, but wasn't The Trump leading in the polls at one point? Anyone can crash and burn, and Perry is still the shiny new candidate. He may go on to win, but I think his position will regress back into Romney territory soon.

I know you want him to win the nom since he's thoroughly unelectable, but sorry he's not going to get it this kind of campaign, even as far right as the GOP has headed. You need to remember that come primary time he has to actually win states to get the nomination. He's there to set the bounds of discussion further right and further Christian.

And why wouldn't he win primaries in S.C. and other southern states? I really don't want Perry to win. I would prefer to have two sane candidates for President, because even the slightest chance that a Bachmann or Perry could be President is terrifying. Romney is completely unacceptable to large portions of the GOP base, while Perry excites them. I hope Perry is too extreme to win the Presidency, but I don't understand why you think he can't win GOP primaries.

I've mentioned this before, and I'm not an expert but it has been said that all it takes to secure SS is to raise the income limit from $106,800 (which it has been at since 2009) to $200,000.

Is that so hard or punitive?

According to the Social Security Trustees,

After 2022, trust fund assets will be redeemed in amounts that exceed interest earnings until trust fund reserves are exhausted in 2036, one year earlier than was projected last year. Thereafter, tax income would be sufficient to pay only about three-quarters of scheduled benefits through 2085.

If I read those projections correctly, an outright collapse is not expected, but more revenue (probably via tax increases) or benefit cuts will be necessary to keep the program going.

Just because Perry is overstating the situation doesn't mean there is no problem.

The income contribution limit has increased yearly until 2009 and I don't know the formula. I presume COL %.

Since then it has not increased, but our population age distribution has continued to change. If we want to keep such a system a combination of eligibility age increase and a higher income contribution increase would seem to be a simple and logical solution.

Of course I don't hold GOP "principles"./

I think the Obama team is praying he wins. All they have to say is Perry is Bush on steroids and that alone will be enough to steer away all the independents.
