I don't believe Big Energy will try to stop this effort as they will keep it relatively suppressed until the time comes when they can use it to the degree of profit, and then claim credit for it.

Remember that Microsoft and Apple began by kicking IBM's butt. That's how change happens, David always beats Goliath.

This has been the goal post for solar research for some time. If they can perfect and commercialize it then states like New Mexico and Arizona will give birth to a huge hydrogen industry, mainly due to the fact that a lot of infrastructure is already present. You could put this in the Sahara, but how are you going to move the gas? And who wants to live there?

1.

The researchers say their findings are a triumph for computational sciences, one that could potentially have profound implications for the future of solar energy.

A potential triumph for the computational sciences: the result has not been verified by an experiment on real materials, nor afaik have the drivers for the effect been captured in a traditional quantitative model.

Whether or not the result is empirically correct, it is important as an indicator of which way the wind is blowing in theoretical science.

2. From the abstract of the journal article:

...Theoretical results predict that Ga(Sbx)N1−x alloys with 2-eV band gaps straddle the potential window at moderate to low pH values, thus indicating that dilute Ga(Sbx)N1−x alloys could be potential candidates for splitting water under visible light irradiation.

I have more confidence in scientists who choose their words this carefully than I have in hysterical sensationalist hypesters.

3. The result relies on more mundane processes than those which supposedly drive the supposed cold fusion. This is good.
