It took me a long time to figure out that the 'apartheid' charge was based on the idea that Palestinians living in the territories should be considered citizens of Israel.

I actually figured that one out while standing on the street, holding a protest sign.

It makes sense, though, because that leads into the next part of the equation, which is the rejection of a two-state resolution.

This lie has its roots in the huge lie that "Palestine was a country & the Jews stole it" that most people (who are anti-Israeli) believe (either willfully, or through ignorance). I find Americans are particularly prone to it, & blame it on the almost Jungian guilt we have for having stolen this country from the native inhabitants. It's easier to scapegoat Israel than it is to move out of your home & give it to a Cherokee.

Not one of those restrictions applies to Arabs living in Israel.

And yet, Arabs don't have a right of return, whereas non-Israeli Jews do.

I don't like this whole "Nationalism" thing. And I'm not just talking about Israel. Why can't it be like in the John Lennon song Imagine?
No countries. No religion.

That would be groovy.

About a million Jews were kicked out of Arab countries. Most of these people left with nothing after living in peace for generations. Not one has the right to return to Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, etc.

Israel is a sovereign state. She has the right to determine who lives within her borders. In fact, her immigration policies are not unique. Many European nations share those same principles.

Citizenship status is derived by way of one of two criteria- ‘blood’ or ‘land.’

In the United States, for example, citizenship is primarily derived by ‘land’ status. That means that if you were born here, you are automatically awarded citizenship.

Conversely, being born in Switzerland is no guarantee of citizenship. In fact, there are generations of people that have been born in Switzerland that are not entitled to Swiss citizenship according to Swiss law.

Descendants of British, Irish and Polish ancestry, for example, are all entitled to enhanced and privileged immigration status by those nations. Throughout most of Europe, having even a bit of ‘preferred’ blood entitles one to a citizenship ‘fast track.’

Israel has every right to determine her own immigration rules.

An independent Palestine will have that same right.

She will be free to welcome those hundreds of thousands for whom 'We'll finish what Hitler started' is a raison d'etre. in a region where religious bigotry, racism and hate directed at Jews is old news as is the promise of violence and ethnic cleansing.

The same nefarious intent is inherent in the criticisms of Israel for imposing checkpoints on Palestinians entering Israel. The underlying assumption is that Israel has no right to a border with the Palestinians.

Interesting observation, although, in my experience, the canard about the Jews "stealing Palestine from its native occupants" seems to have much more staying power in Europe -- which knows a thing or two about subjugating colonies -- than in the U.S.
