Civil war in America is a bad idea. Hoffa should not be calling for one. And the POTUS should distance himself from that type of speech. He is not the leader of the "union" tribe, he is the leader of all of us.

2 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 12:40:15pm

The left's version of bulls eyes on a map. Pretty dangerous speech there.

3 Charles Johnson  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 12:56:12pm

Compared to the rhetoric that pours out of Tea Party leaders every single day, this is really mild stuff.

And Hoffa is absolutely right about one thing -- the right wing HAS declared war on unions and workers across America, in addition to all the other right wing wars currently being waged.

Hoffa didn't start the "war" rhetoric. The Tea Party has been spewing far worse for years now.

"President Obama, this is your army. We are ready to march. Let's take these son of bitches out and give America back to an America where we belong," Hoffa added.

I can't tell if there's some deceptive editing here on the part of RCP or he made this exact sentiment twice but omitted a key portion once, or what. However Fox News has a different version quote, and they seem pretty clear on the idea that Hoffa was trying to mobilize people to vote:

Hoffa called on workers to get involved in opposing Tea Party-aligned lawmakers next November.

"President Obama, this is your army, we are ready to march," Hoffa said. "But everybody here's got to vote. If we go back, and keep the eye on the prize, let's take these son-of-a-bitches out."

It's interesting that RCP didn't see fit to print the bolded line, in as much as it doesn't help sell the biased, alarmist narrative they're constructing.

It is war. The TeaBaggers and the GOP shot across the bow long ago.

Well, if we are to have credibility, we should call out both sides for their bad behavior. To do otherwise is to say "two wrongs make a right."

We don't have to pretend here that this one statement by Hoffa about voting is morally equivalent to all the rhetoric about the blood of tyrants and "Second Amendment" remedies that have been spewing out of the Right.

Charles, give me a break. You're supposed to still be a "moderate", correct?

This man calling for a civil war in hyperbole, referring to "armies" at the President's disposal, and shouting that this so called army should "take those sons of bitches out" which is as direct of a threat of violence as we've seen from ANY Tea Party rally.

It is despicable, deplorable, and a direct representation of what is terribly wrong with the entire political debate in this nation. I don't know why you feel the need to excuse this bullshit from this lunatic, but it's sad to see you do so.

I hope to see the day that violent, dangerous rhetoric is denounced by both sides regardless of ideology and no excuses are made for them.

Right .... Teamsters like Hoffa have never actually been ... you know ... violent or anything. Ask Hoffa's father .... Oh wait ...

12 Decatur Deb  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:46:26pm

"President Obama, this is your army, we are ready to march," Hoffa said. "But everybody here's got to vote. If we go back, and keep the eye on the prize, let's take these son-of-a-bitches out."

Nice try.

13 Gus  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:51:05pm

One statement from a Hoffa does not indicate a trend. Unlike the Tea Party which has been on "next time we come armed" trend for some time now.

14 Charles Johnson  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:51:21pm

"Everybody here's got to vote" is not a "call for civil war."

Come on.

15 Charles Johnson  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:52:17pm

On the other hand, many Tea Partiers showed up at demonstrations carrying signs saying things like, "We came unarmed THIS TIME."

No comparison.

16 Obdicut  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:54:25pm

Wow. That's a hell of an editing job.

I don't like militaristic rhetoric like this. I think it should get toned down.

But by phrasing it in terms of the vote, there's no actual threat here. It's all clearly metaphorical.

And by editing that out, RCP is committing a gigantic break of journalistic ethics.

17 Obdicut  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 2:55:13pm

re: #10 TampaKnight

Are you responding to the deceptively edited version of the statement, or the real one?

re: #15 Charles

As you know they showed up with guns at many Tea Party rallies. Too many to mention. But of course their excuse was that the guns had nothing to do with anything approaching a civil war but used the convenient excuse of "practicing their 2nd Amendment rights."

19 Charles Johnson  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 3:12:05pm

Wow!

That RCP video has a VERY obvious cut, apparently deliberately intended to take out the sentence about voting!

Absolutely blatant editing. I think I have to post about this.

20 zora  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 3:12:24pm

this is the class warfare they have been looking for. and about damn time. the republican party is anti-labor, anti-little guy, trying to suppress the vote of these people in any way they can. hoffa is guilty of having a spine while being a democrat, thus the shock.

29 mr.fusion  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 3:22:09pm

the poutrage over the President not "condemning" Hoffa is seriously unbelievable...........after all that has been done and said by the right towards this President, usually with the perpetrators fundraising numbers immediately going through the roof, they have the gall to tell Obama how to keep the left in line.

Projection at its worst

ABC blogger Mary Bruce put up the video, yet she chose to print the deceptively edited quote. I'm detecting a definite trend here. Hear the truth, believe the lie.

For everyone, here's the edited portion of the speech:

"And President Obama, we want one thing - JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS JOBS, JOBS. That's what we're going to tell him. He's going to be - and when he sees what we're doing here he will be inspired, but he needs help. But you know what, everybody here's got to vote. If we go back, we keep the eye on the prize."

37 jvic  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 3:49:06pm

It will take a little time to sort out what happened.

sigh Cutting that sentence is, indeed, the kind of thing that the Stupid Party would consider clever: a typical...emission...from Karl Rove's Giant Brain. Otoh, it's not inconceivable to me that there's a Democrat ploy here designed to make the Right overreact.

If it's the latter, this conservative has just one thing to say to his opponents.

Well played.

38 HappyWarrior  Mon, Sep 5, 2011 3:59:24pm

The edit is obvious to me. Maybe he went too far referring to them as sobs but sons of bitches is better than repeatedly calling your opponents communists, anti American, and traitors which is exactly what the Tea Party has done so my sympathy for them being called sobs is nil.
