Can you say:

F . U . C . K . - . U . P .?

What about all the revenue coming from employment taxes and income taxes from the high employment rate in Texas?

I thought Perry was a big 10th Amendment guy--he wants states to do everything for themselves, right? Um...now he wants to be bailed out by the US military?

Whatta dumbass.

This was so freakin stupid! Texas is drought prone and they damn well know that.

I know these fires are not their fault, but the ability to fight them has been severely handicapped because of the actions of the TX legislature and Gov Perry.

They will cut anything in order to keep the tax cuts for big business.
I would love for him to be asked about this in the republican debate, but there is about as much chance for that as there is for rain in Austin today.

Sheesh. Texas miracle huh. Texas idiocy.

He's just setting up Obama to take the fall.

In a short time he'll be screaming, "He let Texas burn! Who will he destroy next?" Or some such.

Sad.

Lots of Facebook and tweets for "prayers" to fix the fires in Texas. The rain prayers worked out so well, why not go 0 for 2? Fuck, people, it's this kind of bullshit magical thinking that allows funding for disasters to go straight to the shitter while the governor condemns the government.

Firemen help contain and put out fires, not prayer. Firemen require money for wages and equipment. The green stuff. And again, if prayer worked so well, there would be no fires, there would be no drought, no hurricanes, no tornadoes, no cancer, no birth defects, or anything else people believe they can pray away.

I hope the President acts quickly to get materiel support and money to the affected areas. I also hope he flies into Austin to hold a short signing ceremony and hands the first check over personally to a grateful governor.

Sorry but what we are seeing here is exactly the same as what the main page is commenting on.....a whole lot of shrieking and distortion without the facts. The program cut was a grant program. It was cut by 23 million. There are over 1000 locally run fire departments in the state. If you do the math it is a $19,500 cut per department. In the city in Texas I live, which is about 30,000 people so small, our volunteer fire department budget funded by the city is $1.8 million so the grant aid cuts represent a loss of 1%. I am on the city council and we are going to cut our own fire budget by more than that. And the program cut was for equipment and doesn't enact until 2012. As anyone knows who reads these pages, I am not a Rick Perry fan but in this case, lets try facts.

Are you claiming that $19,500 per department makes no difference? Isn't it true that fire departments are struggling already?
Seems to me fire fighters are there for the welfare of all. We could make cuts elsewhere that cater to special interest.

re: #9 Big Steve

Really? So the Executive Director of the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas is also hyperventilating over nothing?

Volunteer firefighters in Texas struggle with financial crisis | kvue.com Austin.

State funding for volunteer fire departments is taking a big hit. It is going from $30 million to $7 million. Those departments are already facing financial strains.

The State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas represents 21,000 state firefighters. The Association says more than 80 percent of volunteer firefighters are reporting taking a personal hit in the budget crisis. They have started using their own money to help pay for equipment and supplies.

“We've seen budget cuts, but this is the worst time that we've ever seen,” said Executive Director Chris Barron. “As far as the budget crisis and the fuel cost stuff for example continues to go up and it doesn't help us out any whatsoever, so with the rising fuel and the budget cuts from the state it's taken a great effect. I think the citizens and the public is going to see that.”

Yes. First, the triggering article that everyone is quoting is BEFORE the final version of the Texas budget was passed. The Fireman's association, which is a great organization, does wonderful things, and I am a member....but they are a lobby group and like all groups facing budget issues, you expect them to air their issues to the press. Also lost in all miss-representing and lack of fact discussions is that while the state did remove $23M from the fire fighting equipment grant program, they INCREASED the budget of the Forest Service department by $40M for the specific earmark of wildfire fighting.
