Oh dear.

A few years ago, I was having dinner with Christopher Hitchens, who had recently launched an excoriating attack on Judah Maccabee in his book, God is Not Great (Hitchens blames Judah Maccabee for, essentially, his success -- the Maccabean revolt helped preserve, against the force and power of Greek culture, what Hitchens might call jealous-God Judaism, and thus paved the way for the birth of Christianity, which Hitch, as I'm sure you know, regrets). I happened to mention to Hitchens news that Gibson had expressed interest in the Judah story, which prompted Hitchens to look at me gravely and issue an order: "You must go to Los Angeles and stop him."

This is taking on culture-war proportions of great hilarity.

I stopped reading right after that, SFZ. And yes, I chuckled at the last line (and also at Hitchens synopsis of our history there).

At any rate, I adore Goldberg. He's a good man, but a meeting with Gibson? Really? To hear his opinions? Who the F cares. Certainly not me.

And notice that they elided the real reasons why some Jews went uncut? Because the Greeks MADE A LAW AGAINST - JUST TO DESTROY THE JEWS! Hello??? Any Jew who wasn't cut was already part of a family that had given in (the other laws were "no kosher food" & "no Jewish calendar (i.e., not knowing when you can observe your holidays)"). These are pretty much the cornerstones of Jewish observance.

Jeffrey forgot to mention that the Greeks made circumcision a crime with the death penalty. The baby too.

Judah Maccabee could so totally whip Foreskin Man's ass.

Actually, we all like to celebrate Chanukah, but (think about it) we don't really teach the story of Chanukah in too much detail. It's like, skip to the oil.

I remember hearing a sermon years ago where the rabbi went to great lengths to explain that this was mostly a civil war between the Jews. First time I heard that. (And I believe I was well on my way to losing my natural hair color in favor of the more becoming gray.)

However, it's important to know how to read many of our texts. These are not written in the style of the AP. These are written, and probably inventing, the rules of literature.

Hitchens, for whatever reason, is a literalist. Whenever he approaches any type of scripture, he is as fundamentalist as any believer. I suppose it's easier to argue with a strategy of reductio ad absurdum.

However, one of the cornerstones of Jewish thinking is that there is an appearance, and there is an essence. The appearance can be misleading, it is your scholarly task to see the essence. So, did guys attach weights to their genitals? I doubt it. Did they really want to undo the operation, I mean, in the depths of their heart? Almost certainly.
