We need peace with Egypt and the U.S. and Israel must do everything in their power to keep it. At least the Egyptian government worked with Israel during this clash. They helped rescue the Israeli guards out of the embassy.
It isn’t the Egyptian government, but it is about the Egyptian economy. The Arab Spring emboldened an angry, poor and hungry populace against Israel. We’ve had reports that Hamas was contemplating moving its headquarters from Syria to Cairo, although Egypt says they are not discussing it at all. As early as May (maybe earlier), Syria seems to have given Hamas an ultimatum. “You’re either with us, or against us” in regard to the uprising there. Hamas wanted to stay neutral so they say, but they are concerned with Palestinians living in Syria. However, their own leaders aren’t even on the same page. One says they’re staying, the other says they’re looking to relocate.
So what do we have? We have Egyptian terror cells strengthening in the Sinai. We have an unstable Hamas in Syria. We have the Egyptian populace raging at Israel for killing 3 guards during a war they helped start. We have the U.S. who has given billions to Egypt since 1979, #2 in foreign aid next to Israel. Libya is still in a shambles. We have Jews torching mosques in Israel. Everyone is angry and everyone is on edge.
I am no political strategist, but it seems to me that the U.S. and Israel (and I think Jordan can share some of this, too) has to help strengthen the economy in Egypt to try to cool this down. I don’t know if that’s possible given the world economic crisis, but I don’t think we can afford not to. If the region goes to hell, it affects us directly with escalating prices in gas and agriculture. Not to mention war and death.

I think the anger and hate being directed towards Israel are the product of more than domestic economic dysfunction; the Egyptian economy has been in the doldrums for decades. There is an entire society of people in Egypt who live off the trash of others. The Egyptian government worked with Israel during the attacks on the Embassy - but the government is still run by the military. The military is protecting its own interests by trying to tamp down anti-Istaeli aggression and anger. Once elections take place and the government represents the Egyptian street, I would not expect the same level of “co-operation”.

I’m not getting what you’re saying. If the current government is ousted for another that’s against Israel it will be a disaster.
Why exactly it’s all coming together the way it is is terribly frightening and confusing. If the Arab Spring has been lying in wait to take out Israel, they’ll have a rude awakening, I can assure you. And then there’s crazy things like Syria being pissed off at Hamas. I can’t get my brain around all of it.
All the little pieces all over the region have a part in this terrible puzzle and the Egyptian economy is just one. Yes, I agree it’s not just that, but a part where the U.S. can help calm things down. The Egyptians can hate Israel, fine, I don’t care, but they can’t attack and if helping their economy can prevent that, it’s worth looking at.

Egypt has vowed to arrest those who started the violence. Maybe the only solution is to concentrate as much on reforming the country politically and economically as much as keeping the peace with Israel. Can we contribute to that end? I don’t know.
