N.C. considers putting amendment to ban same-sex marriage on ballot
Legislators in North Carolina will decide Monday afternoon whether to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2012 that would ban same-sex marriage in the state.
The Senate Judiciary Committee met Monday to discuss the measure, and it passed by a voice vote, sending it to the floor for a vote later Monday. While the measure passed the committee, it was not without a fight from some Democrats, who argued Republicans were sneakily trying to ram the bill through the legislature without proper discussion or debate.
If the measure passes in the legislature, and is eventually approved by voters, North Carolina would become the final state in the Southeast to add a constitutional amendment regarding same-sex marriage.
