I'm just not at all sure a scientist from an unrelated field is even within ethical bounds to speak as an expert in an unrelated field. If he did get money from the usual suspects, he is just as bad as a Fox anchor. Paid to lie.

OK... first off, he is not a climate scientist at all and indeed has never done any work in any branch of physics that relates directly.

That said, anyone who knows Quantum Mechanics and who knows Thermodynamics, can, if they wish be almost instantly convinced that the greenhouse effect is real. He certainly knows both of those subjects at a level that no-one on Fox could ever approach.

The next question might be ok so the greenhouse effect is real... how do you know we are causing it here and now.

Again this is easy. Anyone who knows how to look at data, and he certainly does, can look at the Keeling Curves. As CO2 increases each year O2 has been decreasing. That is burning. That is burning right now, because something is using up that O2.

Further, you can look at the radio isotopes and find that the Carbon involved in that burning is old carbon from fossil fuels.

At that point you are basically done. He knows this stuff.

But of course, we can go much further. He can certainly calculate the heat equations like anyone else. If you have a greenhouse effect you expect the atmosphere to warm from the bottom up - again exactly what we see.

My point is that no Fox person knows what heat equations are and couldn't even do algebra to save his or her life. Ivar of course can.

He knows better.

And finally physics is very far from unrelated to climate science. The field is of course interdisciplinary, but physics is at the core and many many climate scientists are Ph.D.s in physics.

But Lindzen is paid well for it by various Koch and Exxon funded groups and started his extra science career denying that cigarettes cause cancer.

Okay, then whatever else he brings to the discussion is pretty much suspect, IMO.

Absolutely the point. The man is a sham artist and he has absolutely no shame about it.

Occasionally, a reputable scientist here or there in some unrelated field makes a show of being irritated by the claim that AGW science is settled, because science is never settled, especially complex systems science, and from a scientific standpoint such a claim is stifling and foolhardy. That's all very well and good, but the problem at hand is not one of science, it's one of policy. For the benefit of the ignoramuses in charge of policy, we round our probabilities to the nearest integer.

I don't see why we should care about this sort of puffing except to the extent of shutting up the wingnuts who seem to think it means something.

We respond - particularly in the scientific community - to this crap so forcefully, because the propagandising and political twisting of science in this case will get billions of people killed. It is particularly horrible when one of our own sells out for mere money.
