Where's the Big Lie? Texas has in fact fared better than the national economy, despite not being immune to it. Texas law required 20 percent down payment for mortgages, for instance. As a result, we didn't experience the giddy updraft in home prices, nor the wrenching fall that must follow any giddy bubble.

Unemployment rates in TX cannot help but go up in a national recession. Imagine that the unemployment rate in TX were 4 percent, and everywhere else, 9 percent. People would flock to TX, looking for jobs. And the TX unemployment rate would go up.

TX has, in fact, been the destination of millions of immigrants, both internal, and from Mexico and points beyond. TX is forbidden by law from patrolling her Mexican border and controlling her own immigration. That's left to the Federal govt, to do, or, in practice, not do very well.

Considering how many new job seekers must therefore either be found jobs or counted into the unemployment figures, it's a wonder that TX unemployment rates aren't higher than the national average.

While we're at it---Perry hasn't been any help when it comes to AGW, but TX contribution to world global warming is but a fraction of the whole. Our drought is not Perry's doing. If it rains, that won't be a response to his prayers, either...but it isn't raining.

Texas faces severe challenges from both the weather/climate and from immigration, and nevertheless has better than average unemployment statistics. The jobs we do have don't pay all that well on the whole, but a job is a job is a job. It's something.

Perry's economic record isn't entirely his own, and it isn't remotely sufficient to offset his record on education, the environment, etc. He shouldn't be president. He shouldn't be the R nominee. But the reason for that is not that the TX economy is even more of a mess than the national economy. That's simply not the case.

re: #2 Thanos

The big lie is anti govt Perry claiming credit for jobs that Tarp created.

If TARP created jobs in TX, why didn't they help other states in the same way?

Basically, "Policies create jobs when they are policies I like. They don't create jobs when they are policies I dislike."

heh
