ROME (CNN) — Seven people went on trial for manslaughter Tuesday in Italy, accused of failing to predict an earthquake that killed more than 300 people in L’Aquila in April 2009.
Most of us understand that earthquake prediction is a hope for the future, not an accomplishment of the past. Only the worst kind of wishful thinking can bring a person to think scientists are negligent in some way for failing to predict an earthquake in a specific way.
