Okay, the first sentence answered my question. Don’t these yahoos have nothing better to do?

Partial-birth abortion should be banned, unless its the only way to save the mother. It’s a horror.

How familiar are you with the topic? Or are you repeating something someone else told you?

Even the name of the procedure has been made up.

Federal law already bans partial-birth abortions, and has since 2007. Supporters of the Michigan bill say their legislation will make it easier to enforce the ban in their state — however, it’s not clear that there’s ever been a partial-birth abortion in Michigan. Of course, as NPR pointed out all the way back in 2006, it’s not completely obvious what a “partial-birth abortion” even is: “both sides [disagree] even on how many procedures take place, at what point in pregnancy, and exactly which procedures the law actually bans.” Or, as Dr. Duane Heilbronn Jr. told MLive on Wednesday, “Partial birth abortion is not a technical, medical term. It’s a political one.” And Michigan’s attempt to ban it is pure political theater.

I’ve never delved into this so-called “PBA” issue. Any good resources on the topic, dealing with rw take on it, for example?

here— wikipedia is surprisingly good at summarising the legislative history and some of the controversy:
[Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

“Defending the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban… requires arguing to judges that pulling a fetus from a woman’s body in dismembered pieces is legal, medically acceptable, and safe; but that pulling a fetus out intact, so that if the woman wishes the fetus can be wrapped in a blanket and handed to her, is appropriately punishable by a fine, or up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.”

I used to have an excellent link telling the story of a woman who had this procedure— her fetus died in utero, and the procedure allowed her to hold the baby. Now that’s no longer legal, and this form of grieving is denied to women.

re: #11 Sergey Romanov

The most frequent need for a late-term abortion, by the way, are severe risk of death to the mother, severe risk of infertility, severe risk of permanent health damage— like destroyed kidneys or permanent heart damage, and other things of that nature. It’s a procedure that no ethical doctor would ever approve of except in dire need.

Here is the planned parenthood fact sheet on it:

Oh, and another reason is cases where the fetus will be born, live a brief, painful life, and die. Laws preventing late-term abortion result in children being born that have no chance of survival but will suffer great pain during their lives, their minds unable to understand.

I do not understand why anyone sees that as a good thing, but many anti-abortion advocates directly advocate for it.

I’m curious whether you read any of the comments that followed yours, and if so, whether they had any effect on your opinion.

There is no such thing as a partial-birth abortion. The proper term is a dilation and evacuation (D & E) which is performed in the second trimester. The most common procedure is a suction dilation and currettage (D & C) and is performed in the first trimester. No one takes a fetus out in pieces in the third trimester since it is technically too difficult and a routine delivery is much safer for the mother. We now have medications that make inductions at earlier gestations much easier than they were 20 years ago. Partial-birth abortion is a made-up prejudicial term that I never even heard of in medical school or residency.
