It sounds like a draft Christie movement. If I was a Republican faced with the prospect of Perry as the GOP nominee, I'd be looking for an alternative as well.

I don't think Christy should run this time. Let Romney handle it. Christy is too new as of yet.

Christie? If he keeps staying true to his convictions on anti Muslim crap, I don't see him going far in a Republican primary. I think he'd do better than Huntsman but I think he'd struggle.

They may not like all his views but they'll still come out to vote and support him. It's about the debt/economy, everything else falls well behind those 2 issues.

Ah you misunderstood me I think. I don't doubt that they'll come out for Christie in a general election against Obama but how does Christie win the Republican primary? I don't see that happening this year.

I think this year might be his best hope. The number one concern for the tea party types is the debt/economy. Their top 2 choices (Cain/Bachmann) don't stand a chance so where else are they going to go? They don't like the establishment candidate, Romney, and I think (maybe mostly hope) they seem to be coming to the conclusion that Perry can't win a debate with Obama. I think Christie would kill in the primaries this election season with the economy being the way it is. In 4 years if the economy is in recovery his side issues would make it a tougher run for him, I don't think so this time around.

As I said in a prior thread about Christie:

Same shit, different package.

Christie is just another Koch worshipper (ironic how such an anti-gay political party is into that sort of thing :P )

Seriously though, I have to wonder how pandering to those climate-change denying oil ticks is working out for him, now that his entire state is fucking flooded 9_9

Christie is my governor. I have a hard time seeing him appealing to the base. Basically, he's a RINO as far as most would be concerned. He's also quintessentially New Jersey/East Coast in his demeanor (born in Newark), so I'm not sure that's going to be appealing. While I have no doubt he'll pander like every other politician, I find it well nigh impossible to imagine him doing the Christian song & dance thing (like Santorum, he's Catholic—they might not like that either).

New Jersey politics are notoriously corrupt. His work as a lobbyist a decade ago, and claims of cronyism with regard to deferred prosecution agreements when he was a U.S. Attorney* could be used against him, as could helicoptergate. Ditto for staying on vacation with his family in Disney World while NJ was getting buried by a blizzard. As HW said, appointing a Muslim judge gives a huge opening to the other contenders who have expressed anti-Muslim sentiment and promoted fears of creeping Shariah.

Then there are smaller things that caused local upset like appointing the former head lobbyist of the NJ Builders Association as head of an environmental preservation commission (something Corzine also did, BTW). I know the TPGOP base doesn't give a damn about the environment, I'm just saying.

Last but not least is his physical appearance. The visuals shouldn't matter, but they will, especially if he's standing right next to one of the tall, slim, good-hair guys. I have no doubt that his weight and problems with asthma will also be used to question his suitability in terms of health.

*To be fair, aside from the claims of cronyism, he performed very well as a U.S. Attorney.

I'd totally forgotten about your Page on the Koch Brothers Confab.

The thing is, none of the things you've listed are likely to turn off the GOP wingnut base. Hell, half the stuff I listed might not bother them either. I've given up trying to figure out how they'll react.

Those of you on Twitter might want to follow @ChrisMegerian for NJ politics, at least for the time being.

But I do believe they have potential to turn off moderates, independents, and any Dems lulled into a false sense of security. His views on social security and medicare in particular are little better than Rick Perry's. If Dems have any sense, they should hammer, hammer, hammer the GOP on how disgustingly Ayn-Randish their economic policies are.

It's ok, it was just God. Christie repented after. It will be ok. /

I agree, if he could get nominated then they'd surely be issues.
