Video: Inside America’s neo-Nazi movement
Take off the the overt uniforms, remove the flags and symbols, and these people most of their ideology would be widely accepted within most tea party groups.
“60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl and photojournalist Julie Platner both approached the story of neo-Nazi Jeff Hall with an open, but wary, mind.
Julie had become interested in racist extremist organizations when she covered the last presidential election, and she wanted to explore life within the movement. Jeff Hall, a leader in the so-called National Socialist Movement (NSM) in California, invited her in.
Meanwhile, Lesley and producer Shachar Bar-On were looking at a more specific angle: the murder of a neo-Nazi leader by his 10-year-old son. They wanted to know what role, if any, the racist ideology played in this terrible crime.
This is where Lesley and Julie’s paths crossed. It turns out that the neo-Nazi who Julie had been covering most closely, Jeff Hall, was the very man whose murder Lesley was investigating.
This week on 60 Minutes Overtime, we speak with Julie Platner about her year-long experience inside America’s growing neo-Nazi movement. Julie tells Overtime about a street fight that broke out during an NSM meeting, and she recalls her observations of life in the Hall home.
