Every year, some crop of College Republicans does this, I guess to protest and lament that UC isn't whites-only.

Can't-Compete dimwits...

Why do I expect a lot of right wing personalities to come out in favor of this?

I'm pretty sure Asians should be paying more than white people.

Native Americans women eat free?

Great. Get one native american woman to go there at the beginning and take all of their crap. Then she can take it to a reservation, where poverty is still endemic, and give it out to the needy.

Then thank them for realizing the issues that confront people from different background, but tell them their donation isn't enough to fix the problem caused by generations of mistreatment and that whole, you know, genocide thing.

Absolutely. If you net it out, whites benefit [on the face of things---the long term consequences can be very different] from the not so subtle discriminatory steps taken by CA colleges to keep out Asians. Emphasizing extracurricular activities and sports, for instance, in admissions decisions, even though there is no real reason to think that these factors are more predictive of swift academic progress and graduation than, oh, say, grades and test scores.

Whites in CA face stiff competition from Asians for admissions to the more selective schools. In the long view, that competition is healthy and having to face up to it squarely, rather than get around it courtesy of various tricks designed to keep the Asians within their quota, would be best for whites. As well as for everyone else.

It's a puzzle how people can decry favoritism, and be blind to it, all in one bake sale, just depending on which shoe is on which foot.

Absolutely.

Which Asians?

There are a lot of different Asians.

The word "Asians" is plural. Of course there are a lot of Asians. Starting with 1+ billion Chinese and 1+ billion Indians. But they're not all applying for admissions to California Universities.

Here, we're talking about the well-known and notorious tendency of CA public universities to put a thumb in the scale. I have no idea whether the rules designed to filter out "Asians" have the same sort of impact on applicants who, by ancestry or by passport, hail from China, India, Pakistan, Russia-East-of-the-Urals, Iraq, or Vietnam. I would be very surprised if in each of these cases, the answer was yes, or if in each of these cases, the answer was no. What I'm saying is that if you just take all the applications from anybody who fits any of those boxes, and compare to what the results would have been if academically irrelevant criteria had not been used as a filter, the result would have been more acceptances of "Asians" from a policy of academics-only admissions.

academically irrelevant criteria

People tend to think that the only "academically relevant criteria" (to higher education) are test scores.

This is not, in fact, the case.

College Republicans have been having these "affirmative action bake sales" for as long as I can remember reading about. It's typical and craptastic.

The best response possible:

If you're going to compare the Bake Sale to Affirmative Action…the only way it would be comparable is if the flour, oven, and all baking materials were stolen from the people that are required to pay the lowest prices. And if the baked goods from all prior bake sales were made for free by the minorities while white students reaped all the profits…which resulted in unequal opportunities to purchase baked goods in the current sale.

I have a number of half Asian blood relatives. They are of Taiwanese stock. I believe many Asians from HK, Vietnam, Japan, China, or elsewhere have successfully taken a page from the playbook followed by Jewish immigrants from 100-120 years ago. Family is paramount, family members sacrifice for the next generation, and education is stressed. Asians are disproportionally represented in the upper echelon because they EARNED it.
