Weird is a good way to put it. WTF is she babbling about?

She's a doozy. Her answering a 3AM call in the WH......That should get you wearing Depends way before your time.

Back near the end of the Cold War, the Soviets were "testing" lasers as tools to blind some of our aircrews in recon aircraft. To say something like this is completely out of the question is to ignore that is a viable method to ruin the collection of optical images. Consider even the checkout counter seen't eye safe, let alone a military grade laser program...such as the Boeing 747 version we have developed to shot down ballistic missiles.

On top of that, it's not a in the best interest of a country to openly admit the enemy, who is guessing their countermeasures work, get the targeted adversary to state in open sources, the full extent of the effects of the "tests," so they know when to stop testing and prepare for production/operational use planning.

Don't discount this as something that may well of happened, more than once, just because of who said it.

Does it bother you that a candidate for POTUS would make such a claim without credible evidence to share?

Well, doesn't it bother you that a simple dogpile search for "use of lasers to blind photo recon satellites" has this as the first hit: "Chinese ASAT Tests" specifically stating China has been developing and testing this very capability and you imply you object to the assertion because of the person who made that statement?

Come on, I spent 20 years having to sit on one side of the equation in the military and intelligence and operational planning world. As I mentioned above, the use of lasers to inject massive amounts of energy into the visual light spectrum (for humans and optical devices) is not a new idea. I was adding to the discussion by letting people know such techniques have been around and used, to help understand the statement, regardless of the source and anyone's personal blinders, was a reasonable statement. Now, having spent the time to give you credible evidence (which, confirms Michelle Bachmann's assertion), I would hope you understand China is not our BFF...not by a long shot, and worse yet, the interest on debt we are paying them is building a military (in particular field of experience) at rates in shipbuilding that rivals ours during the Cold War. And, BTW, they aren't building river patrol craft, they are building a blue water Navy: an aircraft carrier, amphibious ships and fleet logistics vessels to go with destroyers and frigates and nuclear submarines.

The threat is real. Everyone should take it seriously, not as one more scab to pick as though everything is political, and any other set of filters to view something is somehow useless in this day and age.

That in and of itself, should give pause to those concerned about our future foreign policy views of any Presidential candidates.

This statement is, AFAIK, basically true. We fuck with China's satellites quite often, finding ways to disable them, and even destroy them. And they fuck with ours.

We put what they call disco balls full of mirrors into orbit to practice sighting and destroying objects in space, satellites and dangerous pieces of junk. This is where the recent increase in junk orbiting the earth has come from. Look it up and there's a HUGE spike around 2008 from exactly that. Honestly, I can't remember if it was us blowing up one of theirs or visa versa. But it happened right around then, and it was a big deal.

What little I know about this comes straight from a guy that runs a portion of said program for Boeing.

It was them taking out one of their old birds...sent sort of message, besides a spray of dangerous space junk into the skies....

I'm trying to remember what I heard about it. I'm thinking it's the "official" line that they took out their own, but I think we really did it! We took it out and they don't want to sdmit it, and we don't want to admit it either. Lots of intrigue.

China is not our friend.

That said, Bachmann isn't doing any good spewing what amounts to rumors without credible evidence.
