Stevlic describes himself as an ordinary guy; a good, decent family man with a wife, two kids, and no pretensions. His humility and ideological fervor have earned him friendly profiles at CTV and the Guardian, and quotes on Fox News and The Hill. At TeaCon, he’ll spend the next two days shaking hands, buddying up with Herman Cain, Glenn Beck, Andrew Breitbart and the other assorted big guns flying in for the revelry, and making nice with the hundreds of Tea Partiers who’ve spent hundreds of dollars to come and be trained in grassroots Tea-Party-foo.

Bring enough ideological fervor, and you can do whatever else you like.

This is hardly a new development.

This is hardly a new development.

No, but it compacts the situation into a sound-byte.

Why oh why do people say Edmund Burke was a conservative? He wasn’t. He spent all of his work in Parliament trying to reform the system. He opposed slavery, which ‘conservatives’ of the time supported. He supported the American revolutionaries, who were ‘leftists’ by the standards of the day.

He did oppose the French Revolution, the Jacobins. But that wasn’t because he was ‘conservative’. It was because he hated the terror and bloodshed it was causing. As the quotes in the article showed, he was just as disgusted by the privileged as he was by the revolutionaries for their lack of action made the Jacobins possible.

For all the 19th Century and the 20th up to about 1930 Burke was considered one of the great reformers. A person who advanced democracy and fairness. Then the ideologues of the Left and the Right, who co-operate a good deal in the ordering of the universe, decided because of his opposition to the Jacobins that he was a conservative and that was that.

What a crock of horseshit. Burke never was a conservative.
