Looks like the 4S is basically the same phone as the iPhone 4, with a faster processor.

I take that back. It does have some other new features too. 8 megapixel camera with better sensor, and it does both GSM and CDMA so you’ll be able to roam wherever you like.

Camera also has a much better lens and an IR filter.

OK, this Siri app looks flat out amazing. Science fiction stuff.

One model available on 3 US carriers, no more iOS version differences, World phone capability.

I’m sure it will do fine, but the meta-message here is interesting. They took 1.5 years to get just the iPhone 4S, while at the top of their game for budget, talent, production, and pipeline.

It would be unwise of them to release an iPhone 5 at the regular time next year (6 months from now) so close on the heels of this one. So we’re probably quite a ways out. It makes me wonder why the iteration from iPhone 4 to 4S took 50% longer than 3G to 3GS.

This stuff is kind of the downside to their strategy of utter product secrecy. When you consistently meet or exceed public expectation, you hold people utterly captivated, and cute hints like “let’s talk iPhone” can send the entire tech scene into a deafening, self-referential cacaphony of rampant speculation.

“No matter what it is, prepare to be blown away.”

But if you come in under what people thought you would do (even if their expectations were completely unreasonable) you put egg on the face of a lot of the same people you rely on to publicly perpetuate the anticipatory hype-machine so core to your marketing strategy.

Very disappointing. I was expecting/anticipating a 4” screen. There are limited bells and whistles on the latest now and wow. If I get this now I’m stuck with it - without a upgrade option - for, what, two years? I just don’t see the benefit of getting this guy.

I’ve purposely held off replacing my 3GS, waiting for that added screen real estate, and I suppose I’ll keep waiting.

As for Siri, there’s an app for that. :-) (I’ve had Siri for a while.)
