Mm. I volunteer at a shelter for pit bulls and other bully breeds. I’m really skeptical of this story because it doesn’t match the aggression pattern for bullies, who when intent on violence bear down, hold ground, and go directly for the throat or neck. Basically, a fight with a smaller dog wouldn’t play out in such a fashion that they ended up outside in the street if the pit bull was looking to hurt something…sadly, I know this from the handling of dogs rescued from fighting rings and the aggression tests they give them to vet whether they can be rehabilitated or put down. My last dog was such a rescue.

I’m bothering to write this out because the reputation of pit bulls as violent dogs has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Since “nice” people don’t want them, they’ve become a breed favored by people wanting guard dogs or fighting dogs, or sometimes just to look tough by owning a tough dog. Such people don’t train or socialize their dogs…and often neglect or abuse them…and do stuff like docking tails and ears which cripple a dog social communication cues. Even more ridiculous, reports of dog attacks routinely become “attacks by pit bulls” regardless of the breed identity filed by animal control.

I routinely care for strays that have been beaten and struck with thrown objects because they’re “dangerous” pit bulls—they weren’t hurt by owners, but by people who thought they were a threat. It’s astounding how many turn out to be deeply affectionate and loyal dogs, with no aggression. I eats at me only slightly less than the dogs that really are damaged beyond repair—they, too, have moments of being trusting, loving animals, but they been broken and twisted around so much that they have no trust and boundless fear.

So, please, just take this kind of stuff with a grain of salt.

I know a couple Pitts and they are babies.

It only made the news because it was a Pitt.

It could have been a human intruder —I love stories about dogs protecting kids.

It’s what they do best!

The Pitt could have been just

checking things out

and the other dog saw it as an intrusion into his territory around his child and been the first to attack —provoking the Pitt.

You are right, the story isn’t clear.
