They are reporting now that he was also hit in the head and has died from his wounds.

First comment in response to the news on Hot Air:

Thank you, George W. Bush.

I’m thinking snark, but Poe’s Law means it’s impossible to know for sure ;-P.

I was watching the BBC coverage all morning. They had interviewed (off-camera) the man who claimed to have captured him in his hidey-hole. He showed the reporter a golden pistol he had recovered from Q. Nothing about a head wound, but reports of being shot in both legs and possibly dying on the way to the hospital. Either way the fighting seems to be over.

After having his own citizens ruthlessly murdered, it would be nice to know he was definitively bagged. Not arrested, but terminated. One less murderous dictator in the world isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Yet another major mideast nation where Islamists now very likely will have greater say in the government. Islam Spring in full swing, the winter of Islam wanes. I am not happy about any of this, including the news today. Very bad situation; the danger to Israel grows each month.

One less tyrant in the world. Hopefully Libya can establish a unity government and stability before writing a constitution and a federal government.

Fundamentalists have taken down their targets: Two secular governments in Egypt and Libya. Thankfully the situation in Turkey is more stable.

In your estimation, what would have been the better outcome, than this, with respect to Gaddafi? Were you hoping for him to lead a protracted guerrilla insurgency, I suppose in order to keep all those “Islamists” in check?

Wow. It’s like the Cold War all over again in here. People regretting the death of brutal dictators because they were useful brutal dictators.

10 Lobengula  Oct 20, 2011 7:46:11am

Watching al jazeera coverage including a video of the rebels beating him to death. Don’t think it was the right thing to do but I guess it’s understandable, given what he’s done to Libya. His son Mutassim has been captured alive.

11 The Ghost of a Flea (R)  Oct 20, 2011 8:06:11am

The queues to piss on his grave are going to be massive.

re: #10 Lobengula

Apologies. He was captured alive in his hidey-hole. This gruesome video shows him dead or close to death a few moments later.

Yet another major mideast nation where Islamists now very likely will have greater say in the government

true. It sucks, but at least it will be a democratic govt.

13 calochortus  Oct 20, 2011 8:44:17am

At last.

I wish the Libyans the best as they try to turn a long time dictatorship into a functioning democracy.

Don’t worry, they’ll find another useful dictator to take his place soon. The oil must keep flowing, after all.
