I'll admit right off the bat that I didn't read the whole article—I got about 1/4 of the way through and, having been annoyed by several of the authors claims, jumped to the end.

After saying that Islam is an "assertive, triumphalist, immigrant faith" and then comparing Muslims to Catholics, WWI German-Americans, anarchist terrorists & the Red Scare, radical socialists and finally communists, he ends with this:

The lessons of this history are many and complicated. But surely one is that, ordinarily, questions of loyalty have been worked out over time, as immigrants and their offspring assimilate and adapt to American society. Another is that these tensions have rarely been acted upon or seen as mortal threats.

But we are not living in ordinary times, and today's threats are more immediate. We do not have the luxury of time to allow Muslims to sort out their loyalty to America. We — and they — must face the challenge now.

Any asshole that thinks it's okay to question an American's loyalty based on their religion is engaging in rank bigotry. It was bigotry when it was done to Catholics & Jews, and it's bigotry when it's done to Muslims. Period.

re: #1 CuriousLurker

I'd like to make some additional points about this article.

I found this article disheartening, especially coming from an educator at Professor Skerry's level because many people will take what he says as gospel truth. Education doesn’t necessarily inoculate one from bias. He may not even be aware of his. Or maybe he is.

I encountered a lot of sleight of hand in his writing, which sent very mixed messages. For example he switched gears no less than three times here:

Among these challenges, the most salient is the loyalty of Muslim Americans. This is not to suggest that Muslims are actively disloyal. Yet their loyalty to this nation is muddled.

Let’s take it apart:

Sentence 1 - A salient challenge is something that is prominent, conspicuous and the truth or validity of which demands an explanation. So unless I've suddenly lost the ability to comprehend my mother tongue, the first sentence is clearly questioning the loyalty of Muslim Americans (in a rather urgent way).

Sentence 2 - Now he emphasizes that he’s not suggesting that Muslims are “actively” disloyal. WTF does that mean? Should it be assumed that we're latently disloyal then? Perhaps it’s taqyyiah at play and we’re just waiting for the right moment to show our true colors. //sarc

Sentence 3 - Now we’re back to saying Muslims’ loyalty is “muddled”, meaning it’s unclear, confused. In whose mind is it muddled, Professor Skerry? Perhaps yours?

I suppose the article was probably insightful in some ways, but I was so distracted by the other words he was using (elites, triumphalist, etc. reminded me of Pamela Geller), that I couldn’t digest the rest. Also, he didn’t cite sources for most of his assertions. When he did, it was things like this (with no link provided to the source):

The most authoritative, however, are those from the Pew Research Center, which estimates that there are about 2.75 million Muslims in the United States. Of those age 18 or older, more than 60% are foreign-born.

Does being foreign-born automatically make one suspect? He neglected to point out that the same Pew survey report he quoted from also states that 81% of all Muslim Americans are U.S. citizens, including 70% of those born outside the U.S., which is a much higher rate than among the broader immigrant population at 47%.

Why did he leave that out? It seems like a rather important bit of context to me that Muslims apparently go out of their way in large numbers to become U.S. citizens, each one taking the Oath of Allegiance that goes along with the privilege. Additionally, why ignore the 37% of Muslim Americans who were born in the U.S.? Was it because we have no need to assimilate and might ruin the vague but ever-present feeling of uneasiness that is woven throughout the article about "The Other", those "foreign-born” people with their alien customs, questionable loyalties, and a “triumphalist” religious agenda?

re: #2 CuriousLurker

The above, combined with the previously mentioned lack of cited sources—not a single footnote was to be found in any of the versions of the article I was able to locate online—made me distrust nearly everything else he asserted. If I were to rebut everything he said that made me twitch, it would fill a small book.

If you Google the title of the article now, you’ll find that it’s being picked up by right-wing & counter-jihadist web sites, with certain choice excerpts being cherry picked (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4, example 5). I knew as soon as I read it that that would be the case, and now the fact that is was written by a “respectable” source will give it more weight when it’s used to justify fear & suspicion.

I’ll have to learn more about Professor Skerry. FWIW, his background is in politics & immigration, not Islamic or Middle Eastern studies, and certainly not behaviorism or sociology. Other articles he’s written can be found here. In none of them does he appear to cite sources for the numerous & broad claims he makes.

That's all for now. No one may come back to read this, but I'm glad I was made aware of it, therefore I owe thanks to researchok for bringing it to my attention even though I didn't like the content.
