With the near future poised to make 2008 look like a mild financial downturn (Euro tanking will take out U.S. Banks and brokerage houses as well), plus OWS, Obama has the opportunity to do something great, make a profound mark in history and win by a landslide. I hope he does - I think the political will to act and risk at that level is lacking.

I hope so, too. But I struggle to see anything happening when the GOP simply refuses to allow anything positive to happen in any aspect of anything they have involvement in. Their win is far more important than the country.

And the last poll I read (yesterday) showed Obama’s approval rating on an upward trend almost at 50% (which is still quite low, but when you have the GOP congress in single digits 47% is huge.)

The problem is that he is hamstrung by a GOP Congress whose only guiding principle is a commitment to obstruct anything the President proposes in order to prevent his reelection. The main thing the President has going for him is that the GOP base is so hostile to the only electable candidate running for their party’s nomination, they may yet select a candidate clearly unqualified for the job, though events of the last week seem to be clearing Romney’s path for him.

He has the “Bully Pulpit” (somewhat overused and missused in the past) … If he went to the American people with a real plan (vs. BS) that had real financial and political reforms … hell, even I would get behind him. Its been done before to beat congress into submission - but it has to come from our side with the inspiration coming from the top. Anything less is just more of the same - we are screwed - pick your thread direction - left or right handed? Makes no difference in the end - we (the 99%) are still screwed.

I think he’s doing that now. And I think that’s why his numbers are improving. In the last week, he has specifically called out the GOP obstruction. As to a real plan, you don’t think that the one presented was real?

Its called kick the can down the road. Something politicians are amazingly adept at utilizing the integration of smoke & mirrors and accounting sleight of hand. Problem now is that we may well be close to being out of road.
