Imagine that. Focus and depth of field as changeable as exposure or aperture. Wow. Freaky technology. My guess is this tech will get bought by Canon or Nikon or another big camera company. It’s easier for Canon to add this to a new model than for these guys to become major players on their own. Imagine that tech behind Zeiss glass.

From the inventor’s thesis linked on that website, the bottlenecks are the laws of physics and processing power. You could probably use a milk bottle for a main lens and get good pictures, but it would take a camera with a 100 MP sensor to match the resolution of standard cameras that have 10 MP resolution, and even then it would take a very long time to process each picture.

Short answer: this is a fascinating device that will be a lot of fun and have many uses, but it’s not a substitute for a standard camera design.

Very impressive stuff, although I suspect it could have been explained better for us mortals.

As I understand, from reading one third only of the thesis, the principle is based on a major lens, followed by a grid of micro lenses, and a massive (relatively) sensor chip that in effect captures the entire field in multiple images at multiple focuses, allowing selection of a desired focus field.

Bottom line, as I understand it, is making the most of technology and very high capacity light sensor grids.

My simplistic response might be to ask; instead of using the high tech micro lens technology, and the super high resolution chips, why not do the same with multiple high speed images taken more conventionally at high speed and varying focal length, then processed to select the focus desired, or combined focii, using software alone?
