The only fairy tale I’m seeing is this book which looks like it was custom made to feed the wingnut Obama derangement audience. The first clue is that it’s being peddled on the usual redneck-American media channels like Fox News and Daily Caller.

If he hadn’t announced it and it had somehow leaked, the political fallout would have been enormous. No, bin Laden’s death had to be announced, for reasons of morale and forthrightness if nothing else.

Yeah, President Obama got a lot of credit for getting Bin Laden. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if this was a first attempt at taking that away from him, or at lest neutralizing it.

Agreed.

SEALs who write books with a political edge are not seen positively by other SEALs.

SEALs who write books revealing operational details are seen as even worse.

I think it’s entirely possibly that the way the mission was announced to have happened is different from how it actually happened. So fucking what?

That is actually a much better version, despite whining about taking credit. If an enemy resists, you have a right to shoot him. Shooting an unarmed man who you can capture is a war crime.

Also, given the rather clear indications that Osama had contacts in the Pakistani military command, the news would have immediately propagated throughout the terrorist world anyway.

I’m not sure why this was downdinged— I think Flavia’s purpose in posting it was to mock it, hence the comment “I’m speechless”. Maybe I’m wrong?

Chuck Pfarrer was a Navy SEAL (and a member of the elite SEAL Team 6/NAVDEVGRU), so would have knowledge of operational tactics and the legality of such a mission as this one. He wrote a book on his career called Warrior Soul: Memoirs of a Navy SEAL. A good read.

As Sergey says, this version is better from a legality point of view since it shows that bin Laden planned on resisting, instead of the one we got where the SEALs encountered OBL unarmed and shot him dead. When news of the raid came out, EVERYONE wanted details, and what little details were given, some made big assumptions out of them.

Pfarrer claimed that he made up names and locations of bases associated with the OBL raid as a means of keeping some form of security. Of course, it’s possible that even he doesn’t have the right facts.

Honestly, though, we may never get the whole, truthful story on the raid until any documents associated with it are declassified, and that won’t be happening for a long, long time. Until then, the version of events will be based on biases and popularity.
